Oh well, it was worth the laughs!
The day after, none of us braved Black Friday. Instead the girls decided to make candy and have a Guitar Hero jam session. I suck, but it was so fun! I need that game. We also stayed at Cal and Jeanette's that night. It was fun to be able to see that side of the family too. It seemed a little off not having two Thanksgiving dinners this year. All the Nelson's were at their cabins except Cal's family. We were happy they decided to stick around. Spence and Oli had a blast "making science" with Alli and Jessica. We don't get to see the Vegas clan nearly enough these days.
I am truly grateful for our families. They are so wonderful to us. I can't imagine not having that support system. Having parents, siblings, aunts, uncles, and cousins that you can share your life with is such a blessing and makes everything so much more colorful. I have the best husband ever and two amazing children. I feel like they help me grow everyday. I am so blessed!
That said, I now will turn into a Debbie Downer. I don't know what my problem is. I am having such a difficult time getting into the Christmas spirit. I have yet to pull out the decorations, which I am sure will help, but I am just not excited to do it. Poor Spencer has been asking for days, but I just haven't gotten around to it. I love listing to Christmas music, but I am not into the jingles and whatnots. I only am moved or filled when it is something beautiful and spiritual. The traditional songs are just songs on the radio and do not even feel festive to me. I find myself actually feeling sad. I am sure part of it is me missing my girlfriends. Life just isn't the same in our new neighborhood, but I know life in our old neighborhood isn't the same either! Everyone has moved, or is thinking about moving, so there is nothing to be done. I know I will get to know people in our new neighborhood, but life is just crazy for everyone this time of year, so I am sure it will take awhile.
I miss not being close to my family. I know they are just an hour away, but it is the everyday buzz that I miss being involved in. I feel like I am missing out on so much, even though they are busy with their day to day stuff too. It isn't realistic to go down there very often especially when there are schedules to keep and when I have a car that requires premium gasoline!
I have even lost the desire to Christmas shop! What you say? Can it be? It is true my friends, it is true. Actually, I don't know that I ever really liked Christmas shopping. I have a hard time with how commercial everything is. It makes me crazy to hear my little guy ask for everything on TV when he doesn't play with his entire toy room full of toys. Now, I know all children do this, but it just makes me sick to think of how much we have and how many more there are that go without. Go without the simple things, at that! Good thing Santa only brings one present to our house, and they only get a few from Mom and Dad! I do, on the other hand, like the idea of spending time with people I love. I love being able to walk the mall with family and friends laughing, people watching, and shoving my face to satisfy a craving of greasy food court offerings. That is what I want. It isn't to spend money and to get more of the unnecessary, but to be around people I love. I feel like I have been removed from all of that, and maybe that is why I am feeling this way.
I recognize the season has just begun, and I am one who does not begin celebrating the Christmas season until Thanksgiving is over. I have time to warm up to all that the season brings. I also recognize that I need to reach beyond myself and think of others. I need to think of our Savior. I must admit that I have been sluggish in my temple attendance. I have been feeling, or more appropriately, yearning to go. Maybe that is where my sadness is coming from. I am disappointed in the lack of service I have been giving to others. I hope that I will take this opportunity to turn it around. I think that is why I am writing this. I think it will make me more accountable for my actions.
After all that venting, I really must say that even though all my friends live away from me now, as well as my parents and siblings, I love nothing more that being able to be with MY family. I love being home. I love when Kevin gets home and the kids are so excited to hear the door. I love the chaos of our nightly routines. I love jammies, stories, crazy night time hair, and most of all quiet time with Kevin. He is my rock. He loves me even when I am not being loving. My family is the best gift ever, and that is all I need.
So if you read this far, thank you! More importantly, Olivia and Nick Nolte wish you a Happy and Safe Holiday Season!!!

Whoa...that post was pretty emotionally intense. Maybe it's common among all "Uterines," I just listened to a buddy in SLC say how it was difficult for him to get into the holiday spirit this time of year. Dr. Harber recommendes a trip to temple square to see the lights, that'll do the trick.
I have a hard time with Christmas too for the same reasons. I do not like the commercialism but I LOVE the family time I get during that break. One thing that we always do that I love is taking all the kids shopping for a family that might need extra help with Christmas. I love seeing the kids get excited over getting gifts for someone less fortunate and teaching them the importance of service. It makes me feel much better about the holiday.
Sob,sob!!!!! Reading this makes me remember when we would exchange our gifts to each other when we were little! We gave some funny stuff! Anyway, enough of that random comment....this Christmas will be the first away from my family and i am having a hard time with that. Every year so far we've been able to share/split the Holiday but this year we'll be staying put. As excited I am to have MY own family Christmas I am sad that my family won't be around to share/see the kids! I am excited to start my own traditions though! As SOON as we got home from Vegas my decorations were up and we bought our tree! My favorite part of this time of year is EVERYTHING! I love the lights, x-mas music, smells, snow(it has been snowing since last night),all decorations,x-mas cards from loved ones, family time, traditions and most of all......OUR SAVIOR!Boy, how I love the spirit that feels my heart when I think of Him. I know it can be so hard to look past the commercial side and it sucks that the world is trying soooo hard to make Christmas a money spending holiday. So, I have a stocking on one of my little charlie brown trees and its for Jesus. I am going to have all of us write a letter to Jesus and put it in the stocking. We too are going to go and get some things for a deserving family. This time of year has always been my absolute favorite and I have always told myself that I am not going to let "the world" ruin this beautiful time.I am so grateful for this time of year.Again, I love, love, love it! I am grateful that I have the chance this year to have my own traditions to start with my family.I am grateful for all of my dear friends who also share the love for our beautiful Savior.I miss you girlie and wish we could go see the Nutcracker like we used too! You are so awesome and such an awesome example to me.Enough of me blabering!
I need to get out and do a girl shopping day with you. Let's plan it soon and we'll make it an all day event. SERIOUSLY!
I hated missing Thanksgiving but I too love having the time for our own family traditions. I've stolen the Thanksgiving night Home Alone movie and the Canada Dry (my kids call it Grandpa Johns holiday drink).
Hey, if you need that Christmas Suupet, just come up to Rexburg and spend a day in our apt. That should cure ya!
I too miss being away from family...but I'm 3+ hours away, so I got you there! But my roommies are like my famerly, so I guess that I don't have it that bad.
So...how about a grandma of 11 with no grandchildren around and your only trip to see Riley, Jackson, Isaac and Miles (plus Eliza and Curtis) just got cancelled. I wasn't quite as depressed until I read Kjersten's blog...Thanks Kissy...JK
We haven't even pulled our tree out yet. Maybe that is what we should do this weekend while I am missing the kids. Hopefully we will get up there before Christmas.
I have some diet grandpa John's holiday drink on the patio...I will go and get drunk on it now.
(Ginger Ale)
Hmmm, it sounds like there is a case of the Christmas blahs going around. I too am haveing a hard time getting into the holiday spirit. Maybe it's the lack of snow, friends, family, decorations (yup, no decorations for us this year. I don't want to pull them all out of storage since we'll be moving again soon). Last night my trainner (did I mention he KICKS my butt?) told me he put up his tree and all the decorations (he was SO excited). I flatly told him "I'm not putting up Christmas decorations this year". I think I stole his "Christmas Spirit" because he looked like he was going to cry--I really made him sad :( Talk about Debbie Downer!
I did ALL my Christmas shopping in the last 4 days. I just wanted to get it done so I can at least try to enjoy the holiday season. We're going to go see the L.A. Temple lights, maybe that will spark a little something in me :) That said, I am SOO excited to come to Utah for Christmas and see all our great firends and family!!!
I know how you feel Kissy. I'm kind of there myself. It's a hard time of year and I haven't blogged either because I don't want to be exactly what you said...a Debbie Downer. I'll keep it to myself and smile through it. One day everyone will read my journal and be like "hooooooooly crap, you guys went through that?!?" So don't feel bad about not being in the spirit yet, it comes when it comes, and you'll get it soon enough.
We missed Thanksgiving and seeing the pictures made us sad, but there's just no room in the Inn as the saying goes. We're missing Christmas too, but we did get to see my mom at Disneyland and my dad for about 20 minutes, which was nice because we miss them so much and we're only 3 hours from them too! Crazy how this time of year makes us miss everyone so much more.
We miss you and Kev and the kids, Lyd, Eric and Bree, Ryan, Susan and Paul right now and it's kicking my butt that we won't see you guys soon!
Love you, girl. Call me later.
Mel, I PROMISE you that you don't need snow to have a great Christmas. I grew up with out it and LOVED not having it!!!
I am feeling a litte guilty about this post. I think I am the official Scrooge of the year! I don't know if you all were faking it, with the exception of Eliza and Tiffany, but now it seems I am not as alone in my emotions as I thought. Have I zapped it out of everyone?
I have pulled my decorations out (the little I have), so at least I am trying!
Alli, I swear your post wasn't up when I read this! Oh well, maybe we were writing at the same time!
Call tomorrow, or I will!
This is mostly for Alli--Hopefully someday we will have a house to accommodate 20 extra people with soft floors and bedrooms a plenty. When almost everyone lived here we could work it out, but not now...so sad for all of us. The only reason we could stay at Grandma Christensen's all of those times was because everyone else lived here.
We moved over here because I couldn't clean the Oblad Hotel any more and because the spiders were the only ones who really wanted to stay there. (Also to get Ashley out of that Ward).
Oh well, life goes on, right?
LET'S ALL BE HAPPY AND COUNT OUR BLESSINGS...Oh, "Superstition" just came on and I am really boogeying (as in Bunker Boogie Studios)
Love you all!!
you already said this in your post but it usually works for me, when i get this way i just serve others as much as i can. it seems to lighten my load and help me work through whatever im going through. its tough to be away from family during the holidays but i just try to focus on my little family and start fun traditions with them that they can always remember.
with all the commercialism stuff...i dont know if its because i know we dont have money to spend or what but i have not had the problem of letting it get to me. i still like to give and there are plenty of things you can do besides just buying presents. my family this year we are exchanging acts of service for christmas.
im excited for that.
i know we may not all be able to be together for christmas this year but just know i will be thinking of you!
hey alli, if you wanna do something next week let me know. they start december nights next weekend at balboa park we could go see all the lights friday night if you want. give me a call! ;)
KJ
Of course i remember you. I love your brother Ryan. He brings such joy to my life lol. What a beautiful family you have too. Adorable children! And no unfortunately Valerie does not have a blog. She is too busy with her little ones right now. She has a daughter thats 4 Keila..and a son thats 17months KC who is truly the definition of terror. lol her email is Faaootoa@aol.com if you wanna chat with her. Anyway yes that story of the toe is a classic steele/stewart story. I think my toe is permanently swollen from then...it has never quite recovered. Anywhoo I know we dont know eachother too well but i look forward to reading your blogs and we can be blog buddies! yay!
Yeah, what mandy said. I was just gonna say forget about yourself and what you don't have and REMEMBER what you do have and focus on others.
Whatever it might be, finances, feeling lonely, SERIOUSLY, just remember what it is all about HE WHO HAD NOTHING BUT WAS AND HAD EVERYTHING .... Oh and all the decorations too! ;)!!!!
Oh and mom, your other house wasn't big enough really either because remember Taylors wedding? You guys put us up in a hotel. Don't feel bad.
Just remember that Grandma C. loves to have people stay at her house too. So does Kathy. We have become expert nomads, us Nelson's!
Thanks for the words of advice and comfort. Also, thank you Eliza for making me cry. These are things I already know, but sometimes when something is said just the right way, it really hits home.
Thanks to all of you...you are all the best!!!
BTW, Eliza...at Taylor's wedding we lived here at the Lake Farm House...(I almost sad Lakeside...that is way back there).
Let's all make my parents feel bad for moving up here. If they were still there I would have a winter vacation spot! Plus, their empty house would have accomodated tons of people. Oh well, now a bunch of smokers live there with the cockroaches.
You're right mom. BUT we still wouldn't have fit at the old house unless we were all in sleeping bags.. wait, I call the pumpkin orange grandma c. couch in the piano room!
AWWWWW! I miss the Oblad and Nelson house! Now THAT makes me cry. I have alot of fond memories from those places and so wish you guys still there!
Don't get me started...Don't even get me started.
Yeah, and John Oblad would have had another heart attack from putting up those )))) Christmas lights by himself...and I would be dead from multiple spider bites...and then we could live next door to a crack house (Spencer's Old House)...Don't get me started...Don't even get me started.
So you in the christmas mood yet?
Yep...
